Open Space Strategic Planning

... Recent Projects Completed, Future Direction, Budget.

To improve the standard of passive and active recreational areas to better meet user needs.

FlowersThe main aim of the open space strategic planning section is to plan an adequate supply and quality of open space based on the recreational and social needs of the Moree community.

Moree has a diverse range of public open space, however "pocket park" open spaces are ineffective as recreational spaces from a quality view point as they lack size, location, shape and provision of amenities to meet the needs of the community.

The provision and management of public parks, streets and playing fields is a core activity of local government and a needs based approach is the basis for formulating effective long term quality plans for Moree Plains Shire Council open spaces. The aim of a ten-year (10) plan is to set the strategic direction for the management and implementation of improvements to Moree Plains Shire Council's open spaces network within budgetary constraints.

TreesRecent projects completed

Completion of the transplanting and consolidation of the London Plane trees on the eastern Gwydir Highway Gateway avenue entrance to Moree. The improvement to the eastern entrance creates an aesthetic and welcoming destination image for travellers. Plane trees and similar deciduous trees create Autumn colour and definitive transitions through the seasons, plantings can be continued in a similar horticultural high amenity for visual impact on all approaches to town and villages.

Future Direction

The future planning process advocated in this section has a community orientation and will produce a quality open space network that meets the needs of the Moree Plains Shire. This is achieved through a strategic alignment of open space planning principles and the corporate goals, objectives and priorities of Council.

LakeMeetings held with the community to install a 0-6 year old early childhood playground in an open space designed for the toddler. The project would be in partnership with the Moree Plains Shire Council consulting with the relevant community stakeholders.

The safety needs of children in the community are foremost when designing and providing new playgrounds. Safety audits and regular inspections can identify problems with recommending part replacements and upgrading of equipment if required.
