The 17th National Town Crying Championship will be held on Saturday the 1st September 2007. The event will be held at Casscades Theatre and will be open to the public as spectators. Town Criers will gather from Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania in an attempt to become the National Champion.

This Ancient tradition has been supported by many Council's in an attempt to spread goodwill and friendship across Australia with each Crier promoting their own area whilst visiting Moree.

The tradition commences on Friday afternoon with the Mayor's welcome to the Criers which includes an exchange of official gifts. Whilst this event will not be open to the public the welcome is being hosted by the Regional Gallery which will allow for the Criers and partners to view this wonderful landmark.

Moree Library will be hosting events leading up to the Championships to raise the profile of the event and generate interest from the younger members of the community. These will include a Town Crier hosted story time on the 28th of August, colouring competitions for younger children and the composing of a Cry by older children. The winners of the Cry Composition will be invited to perform their Cries in front of the professionals at the Championships.

If you wish to see the beautiful costumes being warn by the Criers and their partners you can come along to the Harmony on the Plains Opening Dinner on Friday 31st PM, view the competition on the 1st of September or join the spring markets on the 2nd Sept. Our own Town Crier Mr Tony Baxter-Tomkins will be parading his new costume on 31st August and will present the first Cry of the event.
