The Department is responsible for the preservation and development of the Shire's natural, cultural and man-made resources. Facilitation of development within the shire is an important focus for staff.

This process requires achievement of a balance between a range of economic, legal, social and environmental factors. Underlying this process is the principle of net community benefit.

Planning and Development's function has the responsibility of planning the shire's future in a regional context, whilst embracing the principles of sustainability. The key activities for this function are:

  • Co-ordinating the planning of infrastructure in new release areas;
  • Landuse Planning;
  • Urban Renewal and Civic Improvement;
  • Heritage;
  • Co-ordination and distribution of urban planning information data; and
  • Urban Design.
  • Environmental Monitoring & Regulations;
  • Public Health Monitoring & Regulations;
  • Community Development Operations

Future Direction

  • Enhance the level of community consultation in strategic planning for the Shire
  • Enhance the level of integrated planning across the Shire
  • Revitalise targeted town centres while providing economic and life style opportunities.
  • Identify, record, protect and promote the heritage of the area while encouraging community ownership of the area's
        heritage.
  • Develop a planning framework that recognises local character.
  • Ensure the integration of all future planning strategies with the principles of ecologically sustainable communities.
  • Facilitate appropriate development by encouraging design excellence.
  • To ensure the health of the community and environment is maintained to an acceptable standard.
