The Moree Plains Shire Youth Council is a formal Council Advisory Committee. It currently has a membership of 27 young people from a range of cultural backgrounds aged between 13 to 25 years. Their objective is to create an active social interest amongst young people in Moree, most especially about issues which involve young people and ways to improve community life and amenities.
The Moree Youth Council is very active in a number of local projects such as Moree Superstar, Harmony Day, Youth Week, Moree Multicultural Festival, the annual Christmas Carnival, Harry Potter and other Theme Parties for Children, Moree Christmas Carnival, Community Art project (designing a concept and painting the fence of the Gwydir Day Care & Preschool), Reclaim the Night and the 2008 Moree Relay for Life.
MOREE SUPER is an annual regional event that the Youth Council assist Community Development staff organise. The 2009 Moree Superstar attracted participants from Northern New South Wales and Southern Queensland. Auditions took place in various locations within the area including Gunnedah, Inverell, Goondiwindi and Moree. The grand final was held in Moree on the 5th April during National Youth Week.
A number of projects, supported by Council’s Community Development staff, are in the planning stages; they include:
• a Youth Services Directory; • a Youth Council Newsletter, and; • Building a ‘Sister Shire” project with Eurobodalla Youth Council and partnerships with Gunnedah Shire and Goondiwindi Youth Councils.
Moree Youth Council has been recognised for its work by being awarded the following:
• Winner of the 2007 Group Volunteers of the Year; • Winner of the 2008 Multicultural Youth Group of the Year; • Outstanding Young Achiever Award for 2008 from the Aboriginal Employment Strategy (AES), and; • Finalist “Best Small Council” for its outstanding Youth Week program for 2008.
