To improve safety and reduce the costs of maintaining roads by preventing the damage caused by overloaded vehicles.

Load InspectionMoree Plains Shire Council administers the RTA and Council joint venture North West Weight of Loads Group for the Shires of Glen Innes Severn, Gunnedah, Gwydir, Inverell, Moree Plains, Narrabri, Walgettand Warrumbungle.

Key challenges include the prevention of overloaded vehicles; concentrated high volume harvest periods; seasonality; 24 hour 7 days per week operations; recovery of fine revenue; negative regulatory image.

Future Direction

  • Review joint Council management agreement.
  • Actively promote the benefits for Councils to participate in the program.
  • Monitor State policy in relation to volumetric loading.
  • Lobby for Memorandum of Understandings to be put in place to recover interstate fines.
  • Engage in discussions with transport industry groups with a view to protecting the road asset.
