The Water and Waste Department Goals


The Water and Waste Department Goals are to provide and maintain water, sewerage and waste infrastructure that meets the communities requirements and facilitates development of the shire.

The key activities of this function area are:

  • Water extraction, treatment, and distribution.
  • Sewerage collection, treatment and disposal.
  • Asset maintenance and capital works replacement.
  • Garbage collection and disposal.
  • Recyclables collection and processing.
  • Identification and recycling of waste products

Moree Plains Shire Councils Water and Waste Department have completed  some major water, sewer and waste projects.

Completed Projects


  • A Waste Management Facility at an approximate cost of $4.6 million.
  • Two new  Water Reservoirs with a storage capacity of 2 ML at a cost of $6 million.



Future Direction


  • Achieve minimal impact from the operations on the local environment, optimise compliance with environmental legislation and ensure sustainable development.                   
  • Services to be extended to all un-serviced areas for environmental and/or public health reasons and where economically feasible;                               
  • Establish a fair and equitable user pay system that can be administered economically;       
  • Provide a high level of community consultation in the delivery of services and engage community consultation prior to any new decisions; and                       
  • Maximise overall system reliability at minimal cost to meet agreed levels of service, implement a capital works program which supplies system needs and gradual asset replacement at minimal long term cost.
