Council is responsible for the management of a number of gravel quarries located throughout the Shire, that provide valuable resources for the road transport network maintenance and construction. Council has a responsibility to ensure that these quarries meet legislative requirements in regard to environmental Management, rehabilitation and safety of operation.

Key challenges include:

  • The availability of natural gravel resources
  • Impact of environmental legislation
  • Location of gravel resources (distance of cartage)
  • Quality of the gravel resources
  • Identification of gravel resources access
  • Extraction costs and safety management.

Future Direction

  • To identify and develop strategically located quarries with sufficient quantities of suitable quality gravel
  • To investigate and improve the methods and efficiency in extraction
  • No gravel haulage is longer than 50km.
