Kid's Party Leaves Mess in Apex Park

Local residents in Edward Street are appalled at the mess left behind after a children’s party over the weekend in Apex Park and demanded Council do something about it.

Moree Plains Shire Council Director of Engineering, Ian Dinham explained staff have spent six hours picking up rubbish and removing streamers and party items strewn around the playground and surrounding park.

“Parks and playgrounds are for the enjoyment of all members of the community and everyone should respect the area and clean up after themselves.”

“At the moment, Council does not charge for formal use of parks but as a matter of courtesy, we ask that people let us know they are using the facilities for parties or wedding photography; but after this incident, we may review this position.

Council is considering taking a harsher stance and making organisers book parks for events (such as weddings, sports activities, fitness training and parties) and this will include Compliance Officers issuing on-the-spot fines for hosting unapproved events and breach notices if the facilities are left in a mess afterward.

"It is disappointing that we have to take such a strong stance, but we need to reassure the community that we can’t tolerate this behaviour,” said Mr Ian Dinham.
