Moree Plains Shire Cemeteries
There are five (5) cemeteries in Moree Plains Shire. They are located at:
Moree Cemetery
Moree Cemetery is located on Greenbah Road, Moree. It comprises an “Old Section”; a “Lawn Section”; a “Children’s Lawn Section” and Columbarium Walls and Rose Garden for the acceptance of ashes.
The “Old Section” is broken down into Roman Catholic, Church of England, Presbyterian, Methodist, Aboriginal and Children Sections. It comprises traditional monuments and is closed for ongoing burials unless proof of reservation can be provided. Some areas are classed as “unsurveyed” which means accurate records do not exist for some burials and there are no memorials to assist with identification.
The “Lawn Section” is a non-denominational burial section that can cater for up to 3 burials in each allotment, as well as ashes if requested.
The “Children’s Lawn Section” is a non-denominational scaled-down burial section exclusively for children up to the age of 12. Single burials are catered for in this section.
There are currently two (2) brick columbarium walls located at Moree, which can accommodate boxed ashes, sealed in with a bronze plaque. Families wishing to inter ashes in the Rose Garden can attach a small bronze plaque to the border.

Moree Cemetery is the resting place for a large number of the original settlers who came to Moree and District in the 1800’s. Of specific significance are the graves of Mary Geddes (Brand ) and the Edward Dickens, the son of Charles Dickens. Both of these graves are signposted and located in the Church of England Section in the north east section.
Mungindi Cemeteries
Mungindi has two (2) cemetery facilities – the original cemetery is located on access road to the rifle range and the property “Tundunna” approximately 5km southeast from Mungindi with access off the Carnarvon Highway.
This cemetery is closed for further burials with the exception of burials in the Aboriginal Section and where proof of reservation is established. This cemetery comprises traditional monuments, as well as marked but unidentifiable Chinese graves located in the south eastern corner of the site.
The Mungindi Lawn Cemetery is located in Bucknell Street and comprises a non-denominational burial section which can cater for up to 3 burials in each allotment but traditionally is usually only utilised for up to two (2). Ashes can also be interred here if requested.
Boggabilla Cemetery
Boggabilla has two (2) cemeteries – the current cemetery is located on the Newell Highway across from the Shell Service Station. It comprises an “Old Section” and a “Lawn Section” as well as a Memorial which can be used for recording the details of unidentified graves.
The “Old Section” is broken down into Roman Catholic and Church of England Sections. It comprises of traditional monuments and is open for burials.
The “Lawn Section” is a non-denominational burial section that can cater for up to 3 burials in each allotment, as well as ashes if requested.
Also located in Boggabilla is a historical cemetery on Brown Street. This little cemetery marks the resting place of some of the original settlers in the Boggabilla area and though the headstones are hard to read now, it’s a very interesting site to visit.
Pallamallawa Cemetery
The cemetery at Pallamallawa or “Pally” as its locally known is located at the northern end of North Street.
It predominantly comprises an “Old Section” which is broken down into Roman Catholic, Church of England and Presbyterian Sections. It comprises traditional monuments and is available for ongoing burials.
A concrete beam has now been installed behind the Church of England Section to provide for non-denominational burials.
The cemetery at Boomi is located on Plantation Road about 3km south of Boomi.
It comprises an “Old Section” which is broken down into Roman Catholic, Church of England Presbyterian and Methodist Sections. It comprises traditional monuments and is available for ongoing burials.
