A Ricochet Community Recovery Event – Terry Hie Hie Community Flood Recovery Day
Council is delighted to invite the community of Terry Hie Hie and surrounds to a Community Flood Recovery event at the Aboriginal area at Terry Hie Hie, Saturday 6 July 2024, from 2pm to 5pm.
The event will be held in response to feedback received regarding the impacts of previous flooding events on the community. As a result, the event will be run in conjunction with the NSW SES who will be on hand to undertake a number of initiatives on the day.
A community recovery session will be conducted in conjunction with the SES which will provide the community with the opportunity to share their experience of the recent floods, particularly in regards to identifying the gaps so that we are better prepared for the next event.
Organiser of the event is Council’s Community Recovery Officer, Sandy McNaughton said, “Creating social connections and fostering cohesion is vital to building capacity and empowering communities in facilitating recovery. In this way, communities will be able to develop, implement and sustain their own solutions to problems in a way that helps them shape and exercise control over their physical, social, economic and cultural environments.”
“Local residents will have the opportunity to see their community profiled on a giant aerial floor map.
Created by Disaster Relief Australia, the Big Map is designed to bring the community together to walk across the map to share experiences, identify risks and discuss ways we can better prepare our livelihoods, infrastructure, homes and businesses for events that may occur in the future”.
“It’s important that we understand that a community that feels heard and valued is more likely to take ownership of their own relief and recovery after a disaster strikes”.
Sandy is encouraging the community to come and get involved. “This is a terrific opportunity to grab your neighbours, family and friends for an informative and fun catch up!” exclaimed Sandy.
A free BBQ will be provided.
