Battle Of the Borders

The sleepy morning chill was no match for the fiery spirit of Mungindi locals, as the much-anticipated Mayor’s Battle of the Border kicked off at Mungindi River Park, straddling the NSW | QLD line.

Wrapped in scarves and state pride, the community rallied together to cheer on their mayors in a light-hearted but fiercely contested State of Origin-style showdown.

After a coin toss sealed the deal, the friendly rivalry was officially underway. With sleeves rolled up and competitive banter in the air, Mayor Cr Susannah Pearse (NSW) and Mayor Cr Samantha O’Toole (QLD) went head-to-head in a series of challenges that had the crowd cheering and shouting their state allegiance.

The results are in:
Ball Toss – Victory to NSW’s Cr Pearse
Tug of War – Another win for Cr Pearse and the Blues
Arm Wrestle – QLD’s Cr O’Toole shows the Maroons’ muscle

With a 2–1 lead to New South Wales, it seems the Blues may just have the edge, not only in Mungindi but perhaps in tonight’s big NRL State of Origin clash as well!

A massive thank you to the Mungindi Junior Rugby League Committee for cooking the BBQ and to every single community member who came out to support and celebrate what makes the Border spirit so special.

Whether you are Team Blue or Team Maroon, today, Mungindi was the real winner.
